MIDDLEBOURNE -- After winning 16 games in 2016 baseball season, the Silver Knights are hoping to improve on that record with a strong defense and a line up that can consistently put the ball in play.

"Our philosophy will be to throw strike, make routine plays, and get on base at a high rate in order to put pressure on opposing teams," Coach Robby Jones said.

With eight guys returning with starting experience, the Knights hope to use that experience to replace those lost to graduation. One of the Knights' strong points looks to be their pitching game where they can use up to seven players.

"The ace of our pitching staff is Dylan Roberts. He is joined, however, by seniors Trent Smith and Nate Lantz with help coming from Luke Daugherty, Tyler West, Gage Huffman and Noah Smith," Jones said.

The Knights will be strong in the middle of their defense with Kyle Mason returning at 2nd base, Daugherty at Short and Colby Buchanan behind the plate.

Third base will once again man third base while Tyler West and Dylan Seckman will devide time at first. Outfielders will be Noah Smith, Trent Smith, James Seago and Jake Rice.

"We look forward to the challenges waiting for us this year. Last season, we came up six outs short in the sectional finals and we are going to try and fix that. We are working hard to get better everyday to accomplish the goals we set as a team and a baseball program," Jones said. "I have one of the finest assistants in the valley in Vance Ash, who has a world of experience. Vance has been around the block a time or two and is a great motivator. The kids like him and work hard to follow what he tells them."

Also on the staff is Jordan Ash, son of coach Vance Ash. The talented teen adds another great dimension to the Knights club as he relates well with the players and is also knowledgeable of the game. Look for Tyler Consolidated to have a banner year. If everything comes together, they will definitely be contenders. The Silver Knights open the season on Friday at St. Marys in a scheduled 5 p.m. matchup.
