The Tyler Star News spotlight athletes of the week for August 9, 2017 are a pair of Junior Quarterbacks from Tyler Consolidated and Paden City.

Back for his third straight year as the signal caller for the Silver Knights will be Griffin Phillips. At 5'11" and 160 he has all the tools to lead the Knights to another successful season. Phillips is an all-around natural athlete who can air it out with accuracy or scramble for yardage.

One of his main assets is his mental toughness. He is a well conditioned athlete who enjoys the game and wants to win. Working out in the weight room and playing summer basketball have been a big part of his summer. "I'm looking forward to this season with the goal to improve on last year's 6-4 record and make the playoffs, we will give it all we have with the never give up attitude," said Phillips.

Last season Griffin made first team LKC and was honorable mentioned on the state level.

Football isn't his only sport however as he also excels on the basketball court where he can and does play every position on the floor. He is a good shooter and goes to the bucket well, plus he is a good ball handler and has great leaping ability. He was a member of the Silver Knights Varsity summer league team and had several 20 plus point games.

As a student at Tyler Consolidated Phillips carries a 3.5 GPA and is a consistent member of the honor roll. Keep your eyes open for this athlete for the next couple seasons, I don't believe you will be disappointed. Coach Walton calls him, "a coach on the field."

Paden City Junior Michael Shreves will take on a new role for the Wildcats as he will be handling the QB chores for the first time. Shreves, who will be going for his third letter has played primarily as a running back, receiver and defensive back for Coach Croasmun but looks to be the man to run the offense for 2017.

"Football is the only sport I play, I love the game and am willing to do anything I can to make a difference. During the winter and summer months I work on conditioning and spend a lot of time in the weight room. My goal is to help us get to the playoffs and win the OVAC," said Michael.

At 5' 9" and 155 Shreves has plenty of speed and a strong arm, he will be a triple threat for the Cat's as he can also play wide out if needed. Paden City only has 19 players but size and strength may be their biggest assets. Look for Shreves to keep the opponents on their toes with his ability to move around in the pocket and two good running backs to hand off to.

Michael carries a 3.5 GPA and is a consistent member of the Paden City Honor Roll. He said his future plans in a couple years include entering the military or going to a trade school. He is a member of the Paden City Christian Church and the son of Mike and Lisa Shreves of Paden City.
